Gaussian splatting for real-time situational awareness
MAY 2026 · RESEARCH · 8 MIN READ
Point clouds are heavy, meshes are slow, and neither degrades gracefully at the edge. Gaussian splatting changes the calculus: photorealistic, navigable reconstructions that render in real time on commodity hardware.
HorusXR uses splats as the substrate for situational awareness. Every camera in a network contributes to a single live digital twin — one you can fly through, measure, and track against. The result is a VMS that answers questions video walls cannot.
This post walks through our pipeline, the trade-offs against NeRF-style approaches, and why edge deployment was the forcing function for every architectural decision.
